Special Needs Children

Special needs children are special and I have a very special place in my heart for them, so I first want to get all the retard, spasos, sickos, crazy, lunnies and any other despicable name I have heard to describe children that I have become to love and see as treasures of the earth. They are not any of the above mentioned names and it makes me sick to hear them referred to as such.

What are special needs children and how do they get here as a child that has been labeled special needs? I work with these very special kids everyday and can only tell you how special they are and how much I love them. Experts will tell you that they have a less than average IQ and thus they have special needs in an academic arena. I have had contact with many of these type children and will only tell you, they are smart in every way they need to be. What is normal and what isn't? I ask that question on a daily basis and the question and not the answer is what intrigues me most.

These kids do not feel sorry for themselves and you should not. They are active and do most things other children do, so what is the tag of "special needs children". My opinion of that is they are too kind and full of love, so we need to tag them with something and special needs seems to fit. Most people look at these kids and say, I wonder what is wrong with them and how did they get that way? They would only look at you and smile. You see they do not know what is normal, or what we call normal, they only know how they are and how they feel about their life and that is a good thing.

Special needs children are for the most part happy and live each day to the maximum and only have hope, love and trust in their hearts. What would you or I give to live just one day that way. I don't know about you, but as for me I envy that special needs child that can live that way. So I ask you, are they special needs children or are they just special children?

Special needs children have specific needs in education and learning skills, but they can learn and develop into very productive and independent human beings. We are not all alike and some are a little special in different ways, but the special needs children are kind and full of love and hope, so do not feel sorry, mistrust them or even think for one minute they are not happy. These special needs children are probably the most happy kids on the earth.
